UNSCHEDULED SMALLMAN RECORDS UPDATE #1280

Its time for another non-scheduled Smallman Records news update bonanza! Is bonanza the right word to use there? ‘Extravaganza’ may have been more appropriate… maybe ‘newsapalooza’? Look, just picture me saying it like Mr. Movie Phone. Then really, any elaborate noun works. Anyways…carrying on…

Nine suns and moons have risen since the release of Passenger Action’s debut self-titled full length, and oh, what a glorious time it has been. Passenger Action are on tour right now, troubadouring through the snowiest and most tire-flattening areas of this great nation to bring joy to your ears, and, if you like dudes that smell like a lifetime of tour van and beer, your nose. All your senses will be elated to know that Passenger Action have some dates left on this cross-Canadian music mission, and they are as follows:
02/20/2009 – Hamilton, ON @ Pepper Jacks [NOTE: NEW VENUE!]
02/21/2009 – London, ON @ Call The Office
02/22/2009 – Toronto, ON @ The Horseshoe Tavern|
02/25/2009 – Thunder Bay, ON @ The Black Pirates Pub
02/26/2009 – Winnipeg, MB @ The Royal Albert (w/ Sights and Sounds, High Five Drive and Molten Lava)
02/27/2009 – Regina, SK @ O’Hanlon’s
02/28/2009 – Calgary, AB @ The Stetson

In addition to all that fun stuff, our friends over at PunkNews.org will be running a stream of the entire Passenger Action album starting Friday, Feb. 20. Ch-ch-check it - http://www.punknews.org/bands/passengeraction. Once you fall in love with the album, you can buy it by clicking this banner! Its just that easy! The future is now, etcetera!
Photobucket
“The entire record has the listener bombarded with brilliant and consistently interesting and innovative melodies ... The songwriting on the album is phenomenal - everything fits nicely into place ... ” – The Carillon

Moving on…

Where to start with Propagandhi. Seriously.
The band is on tour in Australia and New Zealand this month, and it’s pretty obvious that Propagandhi were missed since their last trip down under almost ten years ago. Several reviews have pegged Propagandhi’s recent shows as ‘gig of the year’… and its only February! If, for some reason that doesn’t get you excited for the release of Supporting Caste, aside from maybe the fact that you live under some kind of rock where having no fun and no taste is a residency requirement, well… you might be dead. Check your pulse.
…You still alive? Rad. Read on.
Like I was saying, good times aplenty at Camp Propagandhi right now. The donate to download campaign has raised over $6500 in its first week, through donations from good people (like you, I hope) in exchange for two new songs from Supporting Caste. All net money raised goes to help either peta2, Sea Shepherd or Partners in Health – whomever you chose to donate to. Pretty alright, am I right?  If you haven’t already checked it out, and once you get out from under that rock you live under, you can find out more about the program here:
Photobucket

You can also pre-order Supporting Caste at SmartPunk.com, in CD, LP or CD/poster bundle form, or Interpunk.com in CD/T-shirt bundle form. Apparently it has been their top selling item for the past two weeks, despite the fact that it’s only been up for a week… we’re talking about a presale that surpasses the constraints of the very notion of time as we know it here, people. It’s like something out of that twilighty show about that zone. Get into it.

What else is going on in the Smallman Galaxy right now…
- Grave Maker is touring the most caffeinated and difficult to spell countries in Europe right now, and apparently, having a blast.
- Broadway Calls has just wrapped up a stint with Alkaline Trio over in Europe, and are gearing up to hit the studio soon. I’m still a little upset that that tour didn’t come through Canada.
- Sights and Sounds will join The Holly Springs Disaster and A Textbook Tragedy on tour in Ontario this March, but not before playing two home town shows in Winnipeg – Feb 26 @ The Albert and March 6 @ The Garrick (w/ THSD and A Textbook Tragedy). Come. Party.
- Comeback Kid are between tours right now, getting ready to take the Through The Noise tour across the pond and into Europe this April.
- Carpenter will join GOB (who, trust me, are still so entertaining – it’s awesome) for some dates in BC this month.
- The Reason have confirmed a show for Canadian Music Week in Toronto on March 13th at Sneaky Dee’s. After the show, you absolutely have to have the nachos at Dee’s. Unbelievable.
- Sick City joins Senses Fail at The Garrick in Winnipeg on April 13th. Not join, like, they’re teaming up for a single set, but… well hey, come to the show and find out just exactly what I do mean!

Okay, this is the longest update ever. For up to date tour and release information, point your clicker in the direction of http://www.smallmanrecords.com. Or, if you prefer2twitter, like Shaq, get at us at http://www.twitter.com/smallmanrecords

OK. I’m done.

SMALLMAN RECORDS ON TWITTER

Oh, happy days! Smallman Records has finally caught up to the rest of the technologically advanced world and created a Twitter feed. If Shaq can do it, so can we.

... unless its a Kazam remake.
Did anyone see that movie? It was fucking awful.

I digress.

Be the first to know (unless you’re in our office, in which case, you’ll probably be the one reminding me to update the damn thing…) about all the rad stuff that Smallman Records is doing this year, including but not limited to new releases from Propagandhi, Sights and Sounds, Passenger Action and more. How much more, you ask? Tons. Boat loads. So much more that if I even began to explain it all to you, both our brains would explode. I’m serious.

SEE YOU THERE!

Regina, SK’s Sylvie will be playing a handful of shows in February as they continue to support their album Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences. S&S have been posting mad video updates from the studio at http://www.myspace.com/sightsandsounds. Things are sounding good, and the Kanye West inspired dance moves are looking swell.

Well that’s about all the witty banter I can spare today, but please check out http://www.smallmanrecords.com for all SMR-related news, announcements and tour dates. We have an exceptionally rad 2009 coming up, so get thrilled.

A Mini Smallman Update

Got a few seconds? Of course you do - so click through to fill your lovely lives with delightful news from the frost bitten fingers of Jessi-Anne

You may be asking yourselves, “What are they doing over there at Smallman these days?!”. Well, what do we do? What don’t we do! Oh, we do so many things that we never stop. Oh, the things we do here, my stars!

While I have a free moment between calls from telemarketers trying to sell us cruises, I figured I’d fill you in on whats going on with some of our bands.

Those lucky sons-of-guns in Broadway Calls have just announced an entire month of European tour dates with Alkaline Trio. I know, right? Unreal. But before you start sending Broadway Calls jealousy threats and copies of Good Mourning for them to get signed for you, why not try to make it out to one of their American shows and do it in person? They’re on the road for another week and a half, then taking December off before the Alkaline Euro-invasion in January. Check out all their dates here: http://www.myspace.com/BroadwayCalls

As a part of preparation for the 2010 Olympic Games, the Vancouver Olympic Committee is doing everything in its power to get the no-good-nicks out of town. Hence the CARPENTER/LIVING WITH LIONS/ASPIRATIONS tour that is currently causing trouble all across Canada. The tour is in Alberta right now and carries on until Sunday in Winnipeg, after which Carpenter will make a daring attempt to sneak back into Van City solo, playing a few shows on their way home.

CARPENTER W/ LIVING WITH LIONS & ASPIRATIONS
11/14/2008 – Saskatoon, SK @ Cosmo Centre
11/15/2008 – Regina, SK @ The Club
11/16/2008 – Winnipeg, MB @ The Cavern

CARPENTER
11/18/2008 – Medicine Hat, AB @ Ottoman Lounge
11/19/2008 – Lethbridge, AB @ The Slice
11/20/2008 – Canmore, AB @ The Canmore Hotel
11/22/2008 – Kelowna, BC @ Doc Wiloughby’s

Here’s one of those ‘What would you do if…” questions for you. What would you do if, two days after purchasing a brand new van and trailer, right at the beginning of a tour, Mother Nature flipped you off via a patch of black ice and you rolled your van, totaling it and losing all your gear and merch, as well as sustaining some pretty nasty injuries? Would you continue on the tour? Maybe. Would you immediately jump into a month touring the USA, using a friend’s van and borrowed gear? Some people might. I know this is getting ridiculous, but would you start planning a massive European tour, complete with stops in places your geography teacher has never heard about? I’m not here to make anyone look bad, so I’ll just direct your attention to Grave Maker’s myspace page, where you can check out all their crazy upcoming tour dates and show them some love: http://www.myspace.com/GraveMaker.

Start takin’ in the empties from your Halloween parties, because we’ve got two releases coming out on iTunes on December 16th! Edmonton heartthrob’s Passenger Action will be releasing The Acoustic Blueprints EP, while everyone’s favorite dudes-with-beards-that-you-can-really-set-your-watch-to, The Reason, will be releasing an acoustic EP, featuring songs from Things Couldn’t Be Better as well as a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Brilliant Disguise”.

If you’re reading this from South America or Australia, well lucky you, because chances are you aren’t freezing your tail off right now.But even more importantly, Comeback Kid will be heading your way soon! Check out http://www.myspace.com/comebackkid for dates on this month’s South American tour and the Aussie run in January.

Last but most definitely and certainly not least, Regina’s sweethearts Sylvie are in the midst of a Canadian tour to support their new album, Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences. The tour hits Winnipeg this Friday before picking up again in Vancouver on November 20th.More information on dates as well as some very pretty layout work can be found at http://www.myspce.com/sylviemusic. A special thanks to everyone who has been requesting Sylvie on college and independent radio – they came in at #12 on the national charts this week.

My fingers hurt.Visit http://www.smallmanrecords.com for up-to-the-minute tour dates as well as photos of bands sitting on couches, as well as lots of other fun stuff.

Smallman Records Email Update October 21, 2008

Our semi-annual email update.

Smallman Records Update October 21, 2008
_

TODAY IS THE DAY.

News flash. New Sylvie album is out today. Trees and Shade are Our Only Fences hits Canadian streets (you know, the ones that are lined with Tim Horton’s alongside crying amateur stock brokers who thought that they were so smart when they invested in the inflated IPO of, well, Tim Horton’s) with a fury today. Hmm, bad choice of words. Perhaps not furious. More like a soothing velvety (not velveeta) embrace. Yes, that’s it. How better to describe 11 songs wrapped in dark undertones, intricate yet challenging musical imagery and wonderful vocal harmonies. Everytime I listen to this I discover new things. Personal fave: Dark Ages.

Myspace Canada was gracious enough to do a full album stream feature for the past four days. Thankfully, Warner Music Group (USA) was rapacious enough to shut it down because they thought that they had some claim to copyright that, surprisingly, was not theirs. Lovely. How will we solve this? We’re putting the full album up for stream again today at http://www.smallmanrecords.com/releases/trees-and-shade-are-our-only-fences/ . So get there before the Bronfman’s do.

Sylvie is on tour right now in the USA with Minus The Bear. This includes a show at CMJ in NY. So there. They return to Canada in November for shows in the Maritimes and across western Canada.
_

COMEBACK KID ARE A BUNCH OF SELLOUTS.

If by “Sell Outs” you mean that almost every show on the present Through The Noise Tour has been one, then yes, they are. Not what you were thinking? Well, how about the fact that the brand new through The Noise DVD PLUS Bonus CD (wha…?) was number 18 on the HMV sales charts this past week? No? Well, that’s all I have. My only suggestion is that you head out to the last few shows
on this tour. With a line up that includes Misery Signals, Bane, Shai Hulud, Outbreak and Grave Maker, this is a great tour that is not to be missed. Plus, the next time that CBK play live in North America could by light years away. They are however scheduled for South America and Australia in the upcoming months. Viva Comachos and Kangaroos!
_

ISN’T IT IRONIC? ACTUALLY ALANIS, IT ISN’T BUT I COULDN’T COME UP WITH A BETTER DESCRIPTOR.

In a case of “Holy shit, I thought that we had a great hardcore name until we almost fucking died”, Grave Maker was involved in a horrible accident outside of Revelstoke, BC. The van rolled four (yes, that’s 1+1+1+1) times before sliding down a ditch. Though there were some serious injuries, amazingly all members plus Andrew from Comeback Kid and Matt from Sights & Sounds were ok. Through all of this, we have to award them the Employee of the Month or some other such accolade. Why? Well, even though - a) the van is crushed and un-driveable, b) the singer had to stay behind in BC for a few days to recuperate and then flew to Ottawa to rejoin the tour, and c) The trailer with all of their instruments and gear is mashed like butternut squash at thanksgiving - they stayed on the tour and continued to play shows with members from other bands filling in at vocals until they were rejoined by their singer. Take that.

This all happened four days before the release of their debut album in Canada - Bury Me At Sea. Which is now available in all of your favourite locations, including your best friend’s computer where it was dumped via some fly by night Indonesian download site.
_

WHAT ELSE, WHAT ELSE… RECORDING RECORDING RECORDING - THAT’S WHAT ELSE.

Oh yes, of course. Sights & Sounds just finished the first stage of recording with Devon Townsend. We are waiting with sweaty hands to give that little nugget a listen. Watch for a late March/early April release.

The Reason play a few southern Ontario “Hometown” shows before driving down to one of the Carolina’s (north, south, east or west… so many options) to begin recording the follow up to their 2007 release. That one will be out in early 2009. As well, watch for a digital only release coming from them in December. More info on that shortly.

Passenger Action have just finished recording with Greg Dawson in Brampton, ON, and are putting the finishing touches on that full length. Looking at a February release on that one.

Fellow Prairie-ites, Ghosts of Modern Man are going into the studio in November with Monsieur Dawson as well. They’ll be doing a few shows on the way to Ontario. Watch for that release in February/March as well.

Tragedy on The CBK & Grave Maker Tour

Grave Maker Van Accident Last Night.

We just got word from Andrew in CBK that the Grave Maker tour van rolled on the highway between Kelowna, BC and Calgary AB last night. A horrific accident that may have completely destroyed the Grave Maker van and trailer. Though it sounds like there are some very severe injuries, we are extremely, extremely thankful that no one was killed. Andrew himself was in the van and was still in shock when we spoke to him. We’ll have more news posted once we find out.

***THIS POSITION HAS NOW BEEN FILLED*****Smallman is hiring for the position of label assistant. What are we looking for? Someone to help in the day to day work of setting up marketing plans, creating bios, updating websites, doing radio tracking, some accounting, some databasing and a whole lot of tears.

Since we do everything in the office - from management to label to booking - you will be immersed in all aspects of the business end of the music industry. The catch? It’s in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. We’re a stone’s throw from the longitudinal centre of Canada, if that has any value. Plus you would get to work next to Ruben, who can de-bone a chicken in under 2 minutes - and does so on a regular basis. The person we hire must actually like music (unlike everyone else here), must actually want to go out to shows (unlike everyone else here), and must be competent at word, exel and will hopefully have had some exposure to working with html coding (very basic - if you’ve set up a myspace page and understand how banner codes work, that’s all we’re asking for. If after reading this you’re asking yourself “What’s myspace, you are not what we’re looking for. Go back to your gardening, grandma).

Interested? Well then get off your apathetic summer ass and send a resume to .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) . We’ll be hiring in the next two weeks.

Do Some Good and Improve Your Vocabulary While You’re At It.

This has nothing to do with anything smallman. Just a good site where you can waste away your hours trying to prove to yourself how smart you are. And as an added bonus, you are helping to feed people. Hey, smart guy…
