Ghosts of Modern Man: Montreal Mirror Review - 9 out of 10!

Having had the pleasure of seeing these guys live a couple of times, I’d have thought that capturing the urgency of their show would be almost impossible, but these Regina boys come through with flying colours. Hot Snakes, At the Drive-In and Drive Like Jehu fans are going to get all wiggy over this, but on songs like “Sleeping at the Switch” and “Red Red Sea,” they got their own thing going on, spinning out of control before hugging the guardrail at the last minute. GOMM’s true talent is avoiding post-punk trappings while retaining the urgency. Probably the best thing Smallman have ever put out. 9/10 (Johnson Cummins)

Smallman Signs Ghosts of Modern Man

Smallman Records is pleased to announce the signing of Ghosts of Modern Man.  Their new album City of No Light is scheduled for release March 8, 2005.  Watch for cross-Canada tour dates in support of this release at http://www.smallmanrecords.com.

Brazenly impressing audiences with their somber lyrics and unbridled energy, Ghosts of Modern Man have built a solid reputation on the strength of their live show.  This sound is captured through the gritty, stripped down quality of City of No Light, which emphasizes Ghost of Modern Man’s lyrical and musical intensity. Influenced by bands such as PJ Harvey, Hot Snakes, Gang of Four, and Fugazi, City of Light has insidious undertones while maintaining catchy elements.  Guitars crash and clang but are also capable of sounding layered and melodic.  Desperate and exasperated vocals express themes of escapism, self-medication, death, religion and boredom.  Post punk, post hardcore, or whatever you want to call it, these songs will demand your attention.

The record, to me anyway, almost sounds like someone coming home to nothing, half drunk and wondering where ‘god” is.  Not to say it will leave you wanting to slit your wrists in the bathtub, there’s hope in there too if you listen for it”  - Jonah

Jonah Krieser, Jamie Deal, and Chris McBennet, who had previously played together under the moniker Pillar, became Ghosts of Modern Man in 2002 with the addition of second guitarist Stacey Hahn.  Playing 200 shows during the year that followed helped them sell 2000 copies of their debut CD.  In 2004 Ghosts of Modern Man were spurred in a new direction by the addition of Tristan Helgason, who replaced McBennet on drums, and they headed back to the studio to record new material.  Helgason, formerly of internationally recognized bands Filmmaker and 400 Strong, leant a heavier sound that garnered praise from Chris Nelson of Much Music who described them as, ‘‘the best of Sparta meets the best of Mars Volta.”  Hey, isn’t that At The Drive In?
